Karoo Erdvark 4 x 4 routes


Three separate mountainous 4 x 4 routes, with an average grading of between 2 and 4, plus two riverbed 4 x 4 routes, ensure maximum enjoyment for any 4 x 4 enthusiasts. A diff lock is an advantage but not a prerequisite.
A vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended.
Experience is necessary and low ratio gears are essential.

Cost: R200 for the first vehicle and first route. R50 per additional vehicle and route.

Hiking


Explore the wonder of the Karoo landscape on foot. The first Green Flag accredited hiking trails in the Great Karoo (www.greenflagtrails.org)
A network of trails exist from one day circular hikes up to a 7 day hiking trail , all with the option of having your luggage carried (slackpacking).
Overnight in a farmhouse, mountain chalet, shed or pitch a tent under the starts.
Trails are not guided.

**Please bring along your own sleeping bag,towels and a tent for camping. Tents can be arranged on prior notification.
**Beds & Bedding are only provided for roofed accommodation

Dual-sport motor-biking (off-road)


The back roads and the main roads in the Koup and Upper Karoo can be traveled using Rooiheuwel as the base.
After a day in the saddle bikers can enjoy a meal and liquid refreshments around the campfire.

Mountain Bikes


Numerous mountain bike routes are available, varying from easy to more demanding, so you will find routes to challenge you at your fitness level.
For the more adventurous rider, there are some very technical 4 x 4 routes on offer. All routes vary in terrain and degree of difficulty.
Routes are ideally suited to make Rooiheuwel the perfect place to host training camps for endurance rides or stage races.

Horse Riding


Bring you own horse and equipment to explore the Karoo on horseback. A network of trails criss-cross the flats, mountains and kloofs with spectacular views over the landscapes of the Karoo. Kraals and facilities are good, no stables. Water is plentiful, bring your horses’ fodder. Trails are not guided.

Birding: Birdwatchers’ paradise!


The farm includes mountainous areas and plains – offering you the best of both birding habitats. On the plains you may see the following birds: Karoo Korhaan, Ludwig’s Bustard, Double-banded Courser and Namaqua Sandgrouse, and of course the LBJs and larks such as the Chat Flycatcher, Karoo Long-billed Lark.

Other attractions


Karoo National Park, which hosts two of the Big Five animals, namely black rhino and lion.

Chris Barnard Museum and the Old Village Museum at Spinwiel Antique Shop. Both can be found on Donkin Street, Beaufort West.

Beautiful old restored houses on Bird Street, Beaufort West, and the MC Ellis Fietswinkel (bicycle shop).The bicycle shop is the oldest family business still operational in Beaufort West. It is also a museum, and well worth a visit!
