Welcomes you to Rooiheuwel

Take off your city shoes, embrace the vastness of the Karoo and experience the beauty of simplicity.

Rooiheuwel is a self-catering Karoo Guest Farm in South Africa, situated in the beautiful surroundings of the escarpment of the Nuweveld mountains in the Great Karoo with a typical mountain-karoo landscape, 80km west of Beaufort West and 60km north of Leeu – Gamka.
The karoo with its unique landscape and wide open spaces is a place where the visitor is graced by a magnificent authentic karoo experience, diverse and varying scenery consisting of mountains, valleys, kloofs, plains and rivers with perennial pools and fountains. The silence, tranquility, peace and open starry sky at night is something special – a place where you can listen to the heartbeat of the Karoo.

It is also an enormous semi-desert and one of the world’s unique dry regions with the greatest variety of succulents in the world, a huge and diverse flora as well as a variety of primate, game, reptiles, invertebrates and birds.Temperatures start increasing during November and remain high until February. It decreases by April to become cold in the mid-winter months of June and July. Snowfalls may sometimes occur as late as September – October.

The Karoo today is situated where in the distant past, some 280 million years ago, there was a vast fresh water lake. This gradually dried up and the new land was criss-crossed with rivers that laid down the sands and muds that are now the layers of Beaufort Group rocks (sandstones and shales) each layer indicating a different time when formed from 270 – 235 million years ago. In most Karoo rocks numerous fossils of the ancient reptilian animals and plants that colonised this territory million of years ago can be found. New discoveries of Karoo fossils are constantly being made and attract the interest of scientist from all over the world.

Rooiheuwel is a safe and ideal getaway destination throughout the year. It offers you the opportunity to visit and experience real karoo farm life. This is the place to loose track of the days, unwind, catch up with your children, loved one, renew ties with friends and come to terms with yourself. Here young children can still play around until the late hours without worry about their safety.

Take the opportunity of taking home some Karoolamb! A low throughput abattoir is fully operational for the slaughter of sheep, cattle, pigs and game. Karoolambs are cut up and packed on the farm with an option of vacuum packing. Freezing and cooling facilities are available.
Firewood, “braai “ (barbecue) packs, sausage, liver-in-a-net (“skilpadjies”), whole ribs, cleaned lamb-tripe (offal) and other delicacies such as “biltong” (jerkie), dried sausage (“droëwors”) and chillibites may be purchased on the farm.
